I have always enjoyed being around animals as a child and have missed having my own as an adult. So, in the Summer of 2023 when I was given the news that I had to leave my rental property in 6 months, it was time to make some major changes.

My Dad suggested becoming a Digital Nomad, I thought about it for a few days and then decided that it was a great idea and I began to ask questions to all of my network.

I took my love for animals and travelling and combined them, to become a House and Pet Sitter to enjoy the company of your pets while exploring the UK. What a great way to start 2024, having the joy of looking after people’s furry family members, giving them peace of mind while they enjoyed a well-earned holiday.

I am pleased to say 2024 was a great year where I got to look after many adorable pets and can’t wait to revisit some of them this year as well as meet some new ones.

This is thanks to the many contacts in my network you have been amazing and looking forward to many years.

I would like to share what Digital Nomad means for me, I know for many it conjures up ideas of working from a beach or maybe even travelling by campervan. I get to enjoy different locations around the UK travelling by Public Transport.

From Travel Business to Digital Nomad: My 5-Year Journey with ETA Girl Friday

Wow, I can’t believe ETA Girl Friday is now 5 years old!

A lot has happened in that 5 years and I won’t lie I certainly am now where I thought I would be now.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to share my journey so far. October 2019 I was building a Travel Business as part of a franchise with my Mum and successfully running a local networking group Network and Thrive with Vicky Jones.

Although my Dad had been saying for ages I should’ve become a VA with all my Admin background, it was at this time I was being praised for the smooth running of Network and Thrive and this should be part of my business offer.

Adapting to the Pandemic

I took this idea and thought I would like to provide support to business trainers with their in-person workshops.

Martin Evans was to be my first client, and we got to work. The first session was to be on the 8th April 2020, as I am sure you will all remember what happened that year meaning no workshop and like many changes had to happen.

At this point it was time to make the decision to close my travel business and rethink ETA Girl Friday. So, I started to offer general admin support, like many I had a wobble but thankfully I had a supportive network around me.

I didn’t waste any time in getting my network meeting online to keep fellow local business owners connected. I also went ahead and created an online coffee hour open to all to attend. I made it my mission to keep people connected however I could while we couldn’t meet in person.

I hosted my Dad’s 70th Birthday party over Zoom, hosted a Network Birthday celebration online where those who booked early enough got to enjoy cake. I also attended a lot of events and finally saw how I could help.

I had gone from not liking video calls, to being on them most days and meetings so many wonderful people.

Finding my Niche

Confidence has been a big hurdle for me to overcome alongside health issues, but in 2021 I made the decision to focus on supporting online meetings and workshops as a Zoom Producer. I am pleased to say in May that year I gained work with a Global Training Company doing just this.

Yes, I have made it, it has been great working alongside them and still do every now and then. I have worked with some great clients and even had an American client at one point.

2022 I created the Zoom Power Hour to support those businesses that were not ready for my full support but could do with some help with tools and tips for a smoother online session.

Embracing Change

Fast forward to 2023 I had the opportunity to speak at a global International Women’s Day event, then summer 2023 another curveball comes my way, I am given 6 months to move out of my house, after living there for 12 years.

What do I do now?

It was time for another big change and my dad suggested I become a Digital Nomad. Really!!!

But one night I couldn’t get the idea out of my head, and I decided yes, I could do this.

So, from that moment onwards I was talking to everyone I met about this for ideas, to come up with a plan of how I can do this. While busy sorting and selling stuff to be ready for a move in January 2024.

Finally, I had the plan, I will travel around the UK, House and Pet Sitting alongside ETA Girl Friday taking the opportunity wherever I go to meet up with those I had met online.

I am pleased to say this has been a great addition to what I do and took on my first Pet sit just 2 days after moving out. I now have things that I love to do host Networking Events, support online workshops and look after lots of loveable pets.

I should add I travel by Public Transport and people thought I was crazy, after recovering from the move which took a while it has been amazing year and I look forward to the next 5 years.

I couldn’t have got here without my fabulous parents and amazing support network.

Let’s start by talking about the changes we have all had to make over the last couple of years, the move to online working has been a life saver and allowed us to keep in contact with friends and colleagues all over the UK and possibly even worldwide. Zoom or other similar digital platforms have created opportunities we’d have otherwise lost.

VA Connect and Collaborate

In 2020 our lives were thrown into turmoil by COVID-19, our family and working lives were disrupted and will continue to be until the virus is brought under control. The good news for 2021 is that the coming vaccines give hope for a bounce back to a new normality and we all need to be ready to respond and play our part in the anticipated economic upturn.

For those of us who are self-employed it is so very important to capitalise on any business opportunities that present themselves in a rebounding economy to make up the losses incurred over the last year.

Networking has kept me engaged with business colleagues

Networking has kept me engaged with friends and business colleagues, and my new venture, (ETA Girl Friday) as a Virtual Assistant, has kept my head above water and maintained my sanity. Just over 2 years ago, I co-founded Network & Thrive and am extremely proud of the group we’ve become and the variety of business connections, friendships and network of support that has developed.

I’m passionate about helping people where I can and since the end of July, I’ve been building my own networking community, COBRA Thrive, as one of the first leaders within the COBRA Group (A Virtual Office Building for positive business interactions and meetings).

Coronavirus has forced many people to work from home to both keep their companies operational and ensure the maintenance of an income, moving more people into the realms in which VAs already operate. VAs, early adopters of ZOOM and other remote virtual technologies have moved into an area of work that was always and inevitably going to be one of the new norms in coming years and has been brought forward by the constraints set by Government in response to the deepening pandemic.

By meeting regularly, we will build trusted relationships and a place where you can feel comfortable in referring work to others or perhaps you are at capacity and looking for the collaboration with a reliable associate.

I plan to hold meetings on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month, between 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

New ways to celebrate!!

2020 has been a very, very unusual year

2020 has been a very, very unusual year, nothing about it has been normal and getting together with friends and family has either been against prevailing guidelines or difficult to say the least. How can you now make those specials days count and celebrations more memorable when you can’t meet face to face?

In October my Dad turned 70

At the end of October my Dad turned 70, my Mum and I wanted to do something special to celebrate, but what to do…? Being in Wales we were already in lockdown, so a day out or a visit to a favourite restaurant was not an option. I know my Dad would have loved to be surrounded by his family and friends, but this wasn’t practical in the circumstances because of geography and the current pandemic rules. So how do we make a surprise celebration happen to mark this significant age milestone?

For months now I’ve been regularly meeting business contacts and clients virtually and this gave me an idea, I knew he missed the many friends he’d made over the years, friends all over the World and little opportunity to see them since he retired. The idea grew for a surprise online party, Mum and I made great use of our daily walks to contact people and gauge interest; no real surprise, they were enthusiastic and all in. Mum, Dad and I now live together in our own family bubble, so it became a major mission to discreetly organise and keep secret, and how could we get Dad involved on the night without giving the game away?

The two of us coordinated calls, emails, Facebook and WhatsApp messages and I setup a WhatsApp group for people to keep in contact as things developed, resolving any issues arising before the event.

The evening arrived....

That evening arrived, my Dad’s face was a joy, he was a little mystified and then so very happy as he realised the screen was filled with some 20 dear friends from the last 60 years, streaming live from as far as New Zealand, across America and Denmark, as well UK wide. It was great for them all to reconnect and catch up, old stories, new situations and all the expressions of camaraderie that was such a joy to hear and which will hopefully lead to them all staying in more regular contact in the future. We loved it, he loved it, they all loved it!

I can also help get the word out by sending an email to all attending with the event details, setup a Whatsapp group to keep in contact with all your guests and provide any help with the mechanics of getting into the zoom room and for you if there are any issues at any point during your celebrations. You just concentrate on enjoying the celebration with your guests. A Day in the Life.......

What is a Virtual Assistant (VA), I hear you ask? 

A VA is generally self-employed and provides professional administrative, technical, or creative (social) assistance to clients remotely, usually from a suitably equipped home office. VAs come in all shapes and sizes, there is no one size fits all, we all have good general admin. skills but always specialise in one or two disciplines for our own satisfaction and sanity, and provide the expertise that most benefits our clients. The best service isn’t provided by a ‘Jack or Jill of all trades’, clients come in many different forms and have diverse and varied needs and expectations, so it’s better to provide a focused and bespoke service, and adapt to the real needs of the customer. It’s always good working with someone who loves what they do and isn’t bogged down or stressed by a workload that doesn’t provide any form of stimulus or engagement.

VAs give you time to concentrate on what you do best

None of what I do is rocket science, but it does one very important thing, it gives you access to a range of expertise and experiences that you may or may not have, an extra hand without all the rigmarole and costs associated with employing and integrating a new member of staff. VAs release time for you to concentrate on what you do best, your business, we can provide a listening ear and sounding board for your issues and ideas, and when you work on your own that’s a nice thing to have.

As a VA, no two days are the same, and I’d like to share what I’ve been doing for my client’s and give you an insight into me and what it’s like to be a VA and the unseen background work that makes the service worthwhile.

A Typical day for me

Here’s a typical day for me, hour by hour, calls, contract preparation and estimates for new clients, marketing, networking, writing newsletters, keeping website up to date, billable client work, etc..

Like any self-employment not every hour of a every VAs day is filled will billable content, of course some days are all about income, but many are devoted to marketing, networking, self-improvement, research and more.

This week I’ve been using my experience and knowledge of the travel industry to support a lovely lady travel consultant, freeing up her time to concentrate on the complications created by COVID-19 and supporting her clients to overcome some very stressful issues that none of us have experienced before. Travel administration is very time consuming and requires extremely specific system knowledge to process paperwork and with me taking care of that part of her business, she can provide the best support and service for her customers.

I have a client in the complimentary health sector  

I have a client in the complimentary health sector and have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating on social media posts, rebranding, and scheduling the posts on Facebook through to the end of September. In addition, I’ve created a health advisory cheat sheet for her to share, and just to clarify this does not mean I am a Marketing genius, I’m certainly not, the client provided all the content and an idea of how it should be laid out and I researched the best options to fit the brief and made her idea a reality.

I’m currently building up my business and have been working very hard on expanding my knowledge of working in the Digital World and thereby improve the service I can offer. If you know someone who wants to take advantage of that environment and either doesn’t have the time to develop that process or maybe the ability or inclination, then please send them my way as I would love to help get their message out there. With my network links, if I’m not able to provide what they’re looking for, I’m sure I can find someone who does, to work with or who can work directly with them. Because I genuinely believe in helping others in mutually beneficial collaborations, I would very much appreciate any assistance you can provide and maybe we can reciprocate down the line.

Be a Good Friend……..

Part of my own business model will be to use my contacts in the VA World to support my own business when workload becomes an issue, even with an Associate relationship if a client is happy with that option.

What makes me, me

I’m not one of those people who is blessed with oodles of confidence, despite any outward impressions some people may form, I am on the other hand someone who has always been there for others, a friend, a confidant and support. I’ve always found it difficult to move outside of my comfort zone and be a self promoter. That doesn’t mean that I’m a pushover or inadequate, I’m strong willed, positive and a happy workhorse.

Life can be hard

Life can be hard and you can’t let it get you down, something that’s easier to say than to do, but if you’re to move forward you have to take a deep breath, take your courage in both hands and take that first uncomfortable step forward. Surprise, surprise you survive and despite the setbacks that are inevitable you keep going.

Part of the journey

So how did I end up being a Virtual Assistant (VA)? It wasn’t easy and I’m still in the early stages of developing the business, so keep watching this space!

As the Millennium changed and we moved into the 21st Century I had the opportunity to live in Texas with my Mum & Dad, while he was contracted to support a multi-million pound Wind Energy project, which led to 4 very happy years gaining all sorts of unexpected and wonderful experiences.

We lived through ‘911’ as it happened, college life with ‘Magna Cum Laude’ accolade and ‘Dean’s list’ honours, motorcycles, Route 66, Indian Pow wows and more……Wonderful Times. Sadly, that all came to an end with changes in Government support for Renewables, a return to the UK and back to working for Local Government, a job on the customer service that I didn’t enjoy.

In 2011, I started working for my Dad in the Renewable Industry, a complete change, new friends, new experiences, new skills and very hard work but a lot of fun. In 2016, the ‘powers that be’ intervened once again and legislation led to a contract of the whole marketplace and I was one of the casualties and again looking for work in 2017, but this time I had a new level of courage and decided to follow another passion, the love of travel and started self-employment as a Personal Travel Consultant. Yes you guessed it, just as things were beginning to develop following a long period of training and gaining new skills and experience, the dreaded COVID-19 hit us all and the Travel Business collapsed. Yes life is a roller-coaster, one minute your on the ascent and the next gather speed in descent, screaming with joy and terror in equal measure.

The road ahead

So what now?

During the build up period for the travel business I started to get involved in various business networking groups and through the disproportionate time consumed and distant location of some of these, decided in 2018 to create my own group with a friend and Network & Thrive was born much closer to home, a project that I’m very proud of and is going from strength to strength.

Networking has been very much outside of my comfort zone, but it’s taught me some very good lessons and introduced me to many like-minded people and to identify a need that existed before ‘the virus’ and will be even more important in the future….Virtual work and business support.

Why is Virtual work the way forward?

COVID-19 has changed the way we interact, and the way business will be managed in the future,

• More working from home

• More need for collaboration and innovation

• More need to be flexible in business staffing and operation

• More need to be adaptable to meet future challenges

• More need to control costs

• More need for short-term specialised support that doesn’t justify full, or even part-time staffing, or asset investment.

These, and many more, are areas that a VA can support you with on an ad hoc basis, in fact, some work can be permanently assigned to a VA and the associated specialists in their network.

Managing a company’s:

• Event organisation

• Training programmes

• CRM system

• Marketing administration

• Social Media profile and accounts

• Call handling

• Data processing

These are all services that can be moved to the virtual market and would benefit smaller businesses, by providing professional support with minimal effort, to free up time to concentrate on the core business that generates income.

How’s lockdown been for you?

It’s a very strange time for all of us whether you are out there with key services on the frontline or at home, working or with the uncertainty of a job to go back to.

My work as a Personal Travel Consultant abruptly stopped, but my passion to connect and support people remains and when, prior to Lockdown, an amazing lady organised a team of volunteers to support the vulnerable in our local community, I didn’t hesitate to do my bit. I thoroughly enjoy the activity and it gives me the opportunity to use my communication and admin skills.

In more normal times I work with quite a few Networking groups and am the co-founder of our own group, Network & Thrive (N&T), so it was particularly important to me that this activity continued to maintain dialogue and those social and business connections that will be so important in the future. It is especially important in these uncertain times to support everyone, colleagues and clients who are suffering through lack of the usual personal interactions, so without hesitation our meetings went online, and a new routine was established.

We didn’t leave it to just routine meetings, prior to the lockdown we had been planning to host an event to raise funds for the amazing children’s charity, The Movement Centre, and to maintain that commitment we utilised the 2.6 Challenge, which was established to replace the annual fundraising usually generated by the London Marathon and set up a meeting to discuss the opportunity and options available. The N&T guys are a lovely bunch of people and there was no question, time was allocated to make it happen, the challenge was met with individual’s party pieces completed live on Facebook on the 26th April. I duplicated this process with my local Rotary club and we came up with a challenge that made it possible for contributions from any member in the area, no matter their age or capability to submit front line heroes artwork to raise funds for various charities and formed the basis for reconnecting members online to re-establish our meeting.

With newly developed online meeting skills I reached out to connect to friends old and new by using Facebook to issue a general invitation for a ‘Virtual Coffee’ every Monday afternoon at 3pm. Open to everyone, not just those in business, it has led to people meeting friends they haven’t seen in years as well as people that they would probably never have met in normal day to day life.

It’s been brilliant!

Throughout this very peculiar time I have supported and been supported to keep a positive mindset by my family and close friends, my amazing N&T group, and the lovely people from BNI Darwin.

It’s also given me the time to focus on my website and now have this great site live, thanks to Sarah Hepburn at Sezza Design.
